Many future yurt dwellers ask me "what's it like to live in a yurt?"
We often share stories from our customers here on our yurt blog (you can read all of them here) and there are several books written by yurt owners/experts/storytellers. That list of books about the yurt experience is short, but it is growing every year!
One of the newer books I am happy to recommend is by Jen McGeehan, called My Year In A Yurt. In it, Jen tells her story about leaving her home in Big Bear, California, to live in a yurt on "The Big Island!" Jen and her husband, along with their goats and horses, moved to an off-the-grid yurt in Hawaii, where Jen was able to pay off her debts and deepen her spirituality.
Jen wanted to share the yurt life with others, and she has partnered with Yurts of Hawaii and Habitat for Humanity to build a yurt for a family in need. The project is currently in the fundraising stage.
Here's an excerpt from the Habitat for Humanity about the project:
This great partnership will open the door to bring yurts into Habitat’s worldwide family of dwellings. Habitat For Hawaii will bring the resources of volunteers and crew members, interior materials, as well as fund raising. Yurts of Hawaii will bring the design, plans, expertise, and construction contractors. And Jen will bring the marketing, collaboration skills, and partial financing by donating 15% of net proceeds from the sale of ‘MY YEAR IN A YURT’. It is an exciting option for sustainable and affordable housing in today’s financially stretched economy. With approximately one-third of our Island residents at or below poverty level, this yurt and those to come offer realistic hope of home ownership to many.
We want to invite you to join in and help a deserving family make a yurt a home!
Please note that this project has ended. You can still find Jen's book on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/My-Year-Yurt-Jen-McGeehan/dp/1628548800/
Those of you in Hawai'i (or who are planning your vacation there!) are invited for afternoon tea at the Four Seasons! On October 25, you can join Jen, Habitat for Humanity, Yurts of Hawaii, and Gubernatorial candidate Duke Aiona in support of this great cause! Click the image below to download the invitation.
Yours in yurts,
