Rainier Yurts is now Rainier Outdoor. Ready for Adventure!
It's a Wrap!

As promised, let's wrap up our comments on this week's episode of HGTV's Design Stars. First, I want to thank Colorado Yurts for loaning the three yurts for the designers to each create a bedroom oasis. It is a small community, and we all have to work together to create awareness of our wonderful dwellings.

First up was Danielle who had a rough start by painting her canvas walls a bright yellow. She was horrified when she returned to her yurt and saw it hanging. Safe to say THAT I WAS HORRIFIED TOO!

While her theme was "Modern Day Safari" it really did not work for me in terms as an oasis. I thought that the boring grey reclaimed wood bed (honestly it looked like plywood) tragically fell short of designer worthy.

Danielle had some terrific accessories and boutique store finds, but it seamed a bit eclectic and hodge-podge to pull of any cohesive sanctuary look. To me it was not relaxing or soothing. It looked like she went to garage sales and put a bunch of mixed pieces together.

My vote:

Thumbs down!

Next up was Hilari who sought a Bali inspired theme. I loved the bright hues of lime green, fuscia, and purple with pops of orange here and there. She used tropical fresh flowers as accents that really brought you to the island of Bali. The amazing antique bed, although a pain to set-up, in my opinion made the room and really showed her dedication to her Indonesian theme.

Hilari was critiqued for not having more storage in her yurt design and for the wasted space on either side of the bed - which ultimately lost her the competition. I don't know...how important is storage space in a fantasy oasis bedroom? Isn't the point to get lost in the moment and forget about the trouble you left behind in the real world? I think she got short-changed on this one... because I absolutely loved her sitting area with the slipper chairs!

My vote:

A big thumbs up!

A big thumbs up!

Lastly we have Britany who chose to create a tropical beach bungalow using water colors and retro beach house furniture. The judges really like the rotating bed with the storage cubby and closet bars on the opposite side of the headboard. I felt that there was entirely too much wood on the headboard, it could have been softened with a fabric headboard or another of her wonderful photographs.

I did like her use of her own photography to bring the outside in. I would have liked some kind of floor covering. With the lattice walls, wood rafters, wood floor and that massive wood headboard it would have been nice to have a big fluffy white rug anchoring the space.

While Britany's concept was super functional - does it scream oasis bedroom? I think it is closer than Danielle's attempt but in my opinion not as close as Hilari got. Aside from the teal chiffon fabric floating from the ceiling center point it really didn't have a fantasy feel to it. While the judges loved the huge round globe light fixture, I felt that it blocked the dome and all of it's natural beauty. Anyone who has ever slept in a yurt knows that one of the best parts is drifting off to sleep staring at the star-lit sky.

My vote:

Another thumbs down

Another thumbs down

Sad to see Hilari go. She can come hang out at Rainier Yurts in Seattle any time and give me a hand decorating one of our three models set up in our river front location!
