Living In A Yurt Full Time

Full Time Living In a Yurt

A house isn't a yurt, but a yurt can be a great house and a wonderful home! One home well worth living in full time.

Daily we talk with people at every stage of the "yurt life." Many hope to make their yurt home but are uncertain that it's right for them. I also get calls from people who live in yurts full-time. Many of these people had the same feelings. However yurt owners I talk to have a common thread, they appreciate their yurt homes and the gift of living so close to nature!

I certainly understand why the idea of living in a yurt full-time can be tough to wrap your mind around. Maybe you are not used to the idea of yurt homes, the roundness, or have a hard time imagining how to fit all of your stuff into a downsized home.

But what if I told you that a yurt can have all the amenities of a regular house,  a front door with an entryway, electricity,  a bathroom, and a full kitchen that leads to a back door deck with a barbecue? Oh yeah, sign me up!

Home Planning

Imagine this, you can actually construct a full kitchen with all of the conveniences of a stick-built home, including a gorgeous bathroom with a shower.

Walls

Interior walls are not as complicated as you might imagine for yurt homes. They can be constructed to include plumbing and electricity. Think about building pony-sized partitions as interior walls, they offer privacy while keeping the interior looking spacious.  All room dividers should be built from the floor up. For structural reasons, you can not build off the rafters. However, you can build up to the rafters to mimic the ceiling line this gives the appearance of floor-to-ceiling walls.

Floor Plan

You should think about the space because square footage is at a premium. Feng Shui is a great way to approach positivity when designing circular yurt living spaces. I also recommend taking a look at our sample floor plans. You'll notice how many of them include lofts to use the vertical space as efficiently as the horizontal space!

Yurt Homes and Full Time Living

My most recent yurt client is a wonderfully grounded individual who has embraced the Her yurt   She has lived in yurts most of her life. She tells stories of various sizes and models of yurts but none the less, life in the round.

I asked her the best part of living yurt full time. She told me that in addition to being affordable and fun that the ease of upkeep and minimal maintenance was key since she works full time.

A Connection With Nature

Another aspect that she shared with me was the connection with nature. The light (or the dark), the sounds, the smells, the vibe. She says that she loves to have newcomers visit her yurt and interact with the sounds of nature.

The Takeaway

We talked about the everyday experience and if there were any negative aspects to living in modern yurts She paused, "everything needs to be custom made to fit with the round walls." You have to be creative when it comes to furniture placement and wall construction. If you follow your floor plans you can be living your dream!
