A Camping tradition lives on!
Have you ever noticed how some things in history live on? The teepee camping tradition hasn’t changed much in hundreds of years because – it was a great design, to begin with! Take a look at how simple they are to assemble. In this short video, we take you through how you can build your own Teepee. OH Yeah!
The Teepees design was centuries ahead of its time. The Teepee is the ultimate mobile shelter built to withstand a full range of weather extremes.
The graceful, natural form of the Rainier Outdoor Teepee is the traditional Sioux design with slight modifications. The traditional teepee, which is always a cone-shaped tent structure, was made from animal hide stretched upon wooden poles called “lodge poles.” The word teepee comes from the Lakota word Teepee which means “they dwell” and/or refers to a dwelling. The teepee is not to be confused with the wigwam which is a dome-shaped shelter typically made of bark layered on a pole structure.
Native Americans used the original teepees as their primary shelter. The Plains Indians were known for their nomadic hunting style and the portability of the teepee suited this lifestyle. The teepee’s design allowed for easy set-up and take-down to allow tribal camps to be moved to follow game migrations, especially the bison herds.
The Teepee, A Camping Tradition Lives On
Historically most teepees in the village or gathering would not have been painted. Occasionally teepees were however painted to depict a historical significance like war, hunting, and dream sequences or visions. Ceremonies and prayers were offered as the dreamer recounted his dream to the priests and elders of the community. Skilled painters then created new designs to be painted on the teepee covers.
Today’s teepee still has a great circular design, with an open top that stays warm in the winter and cools in the summer. Our teepees are designed to be easy to set up or be taken down and stored. Whether situated along the shore at an overnight youth-camp learning teaching and fostering friendships or a permanent backyard addition.
Teepees are becoming a popular trend with a new generation of explorers. Firstly, Rainier Outdoor Teepees feature a durable Army Duck Cotton fabric which will give your teepee a longer life span. Secondly, this cotton canvas fabric has been treated at the mill for mildew resistance and flame retardancy. Thirdly, All seams are ‘double-needled’ and lapped to shed water down the slope of the outside “skin”. Our superior teepees are made with brass grommet pinning holes (6” apart), staking loops (36” apart), and reinforced corners on all smoke flaps.
Complete with lodge poles, fabric, and a storage bag; with the Rainier Outdoor Teepee, you are ready for an adventure!
