Hardwood Floors Make Yurts Look Amazing!
The true beauty of a yurt is on the inside. Hardwood floors make quite an impression and add a down-home feel. Below we give you a rundown of what steps to take next and what to expect when installing interior yurt flooring.
Yurts don’t maintain their structural integrity as well if placed directly on the ground but should be firmly attached to a circular platform of the same size as the yurt you are purchasing.
If you are building a residential yurt fixed with plumbing and electricity it’s best to elevate at least 18”-24’ providing a crawl space. Any type of appropriate timber decking material is a great option.
We recommend working with your local lumber yard to make sure the material fits the platform plans according to site conditions and code requirements. Some of our customers use Structural Insulated Panels and other similar flooring and deck material.
Using Structural Insulated Panels (SIPS) for your platform will help you build your platform faster, with fewer parts.
NOTE: The main thing to remember is that you MUST put down your finished yurt interior flooring BEFORE you start to put up your yurt. The lattice sits on the finished floor and cannot be lifted up to install the floor.
You might find a few skilled carpenters that will install flooring after the yurt this is not something you should attempt in your new yurt home!
The interior flooring should reflect your taste. Combine that with your family and lifestyle whether that is luxurious, simple or somewhere in between.
The most common flooring is tongue and groove wood flooring. However, if tile or linoleum is what you are looking for a subfloor should be laid first.
Selecting hardwood floors for your yurt can be challenging. Research floor properties. This will help determine the most functional, versatile and enduring wood that suits your lifestyle. Take some time to pay attention to the gain and texture of the patterns in the wood. Patterns and shapes in the flooring can set off great interior decorating ideas.
Shopping For Your Flooring
If you’re looking for a wood floor that can withstand the wear of daily use American cherry, red oak, and hard maple are great! Their beauty is luxurious and their durability is almost unparalleled. Alternatives to wood are cork, bamboo, or rubber flooring. Cork is environmentally-conscious, easy to maintain, and comfortable to stand on. Rubber flooring and Marmoleum are earth-friendly with bacterial-resistant and anti-static qualities.
Berber Carpet is still a favorite yurt floor covering, it's easy to clean, soft, and durable. Ceramic tile is becoming more popular in warmer regions and with radiant heat coils in colder regions. I am waiting for the first customer to do a concrete platform with stained concrete flooring.
Most customer service at flooring centers can answer your questions on installing interior yurt flooring. First, it is best to know the square footage before you go shopping. This way customer service can actually calculate the overage for the round shape of your platform. Second, the "big box" stores usually have some flooring on sale, let them know this is for a round platform. Lastly, look at Craigslist and the Little Nickle, they are great sources for overstock and installation deals.
There is no right or wrong ... whatever you decide to do, make it your own!
